Racing bet types explained

BetHow it works
WinYour horse must finish first. The simplest bet, and the easiest to follow.
Each-wayTwo bets in one: a win bet and a place bet. The place part pays a fraction of the odds if your horse finishes in the places set by the race terms.
ForecastPick the first and second in a race. A straight forecast needs the exact order; a reverse forecast covers both orders for double the stake.
TricastPick the first three home in the correct order. Harder to land, so returns can be much bigger than a single win bet.
AccumulatorLink selections from different races. Every leg must win, but the odds multiply together.

Each-way terms, such as the number of places and the fraction, vary by race. Check them before you confirm a bet.

Tips for a smarter day at the races

Read the form before you stake. Recent runs, the going, the distance and the trainer's strike rate all matter, and a horse that loves soft ground may struggle on a quick surface. Compare the price you are offered with how likely you honestly think the horse is to win.

  • Set a budget for the day and stick to it, whatever the result of the last race;
  • Consider each-way on big-field handicaps, where finishing in the places is more realistic than winning;
  • Never chase losses, because a losing race is not a reason to double up on the next;
  • Take a break between races and track your session time with the account tools.

Virtual horse racing is on the Virtuals page. Other sports are listed on the sports page.

Racing FAQs

Is horse racing available at LuckyMate?

Yes. Horse racing is in the sportsbook, and virtual horse racing is on the Virtuals page.

What is an each-way bet?

It is two equal stakes: one on your horse to win and one on it to place. If it wins, both parts pay; if it only places, just the place part pays at a fraction of the odds.

What is the difference between a forecast and a tricast?

A forecast asks you to name the first two finishers, a tricast the first three. Tricasts are harder to land but can pay more.

Can I set limits on my racing bets?

Yes. LuckyMate has tools to set limits, take time out and track your play. Gamble only what you can afford to lose. Help is available at BeGambleAware.org.

Ready for the next race?
